Intelligent Transport System (ITS) in Dhaka (Part-1)

Every day early in the morning people of Dhaka city wake up and prepare their-selves for their way to office, educational institutions and so on and they do not know whether they can make it within scheduled time. Trust me people who uses public transport is more vulnerable because they have to face two obstacles: Transport fair (You can hardly hire a CNG below TK Minimum 200) and Traveling Time (in Dhaka there are more cars than the passengers causing traffic congestion). I have been facing the problem for quite a couple of years. In 2011, I used to live at Mirpur-1 and my office was located in Gulshan-1. I had to spend 1.5 hours to reach office from my home. The same thing happened at the time of returning which used to take at least 1.5 hrs. So totaling 1.5+1.5=3 hrs per day was lost. In a year, I had lost = 3X22X12= 792 hours (Assuming, 1 Month = 22 working days and 1 year = 12 months)equivalent to 33 days (1 month). As a result, I had lost one month from a year ! Thousands of man-hour is losing in such way each year and no one pays proper attention to these. This is the real scenario of the capital of Bangladesh ! It is quite clear that I am pointing to the burning issue "Traffic Congestion" in Dhaka.

Our Bangladeshi Style of resolving this unbearable traffic congestion is to build flyovers haphazardly adding fuel to this fire ! Actually, we don't see the big picture rather providing peace-meal solution to the problem. We don't have efficient road network. As a standard practice, any mega city should have at least 25% of it whole area occupied by roads but unfortunately we have only 8%. So putting flyover in the place of Traffic congestion is not the solution. I have observed also that these flyovers were not designed taking proper traffic volume analysis into cognizance and it is to be noted that the outlet of the flyover is only one. This creates the major problem in alleviating the problem. There are also immense problems of road network of Dhaka, which can easily be identified by giving proper thoughts and observation. My focus is to find an efficient solution.

Just Imagine, if there were opportunities like identifying the road with longtime congestion and finding out the alternative way by sending a single sms on your way towards office.....
